In order to add or change the menu items on a WordPress website, you must have Administrator privileges.
The latest York University Communications Standards stipulate where certain categories of content should appear on a webpage (eg. social media feeds, external links, promo buttons and events listings.) Please see the York Communications Standards website (http://www.yorku.ca/yorkweb/standards/web/) for details regarding layout, dimensions, and item placement.
How to add or change content in a website’s left-column menu:
- Log into your WordPress website
- Click on Appearance > Menus
- If no menu is shown in the main area, click on the + sign at the top and name the menu
To make it easy to remember / reference, name it based on where it will appear – ie. ‘Left Navigation’ or ‘Left Menu’, etc. rather than ‘A Great Menu thing’ or ‘Some stuff I want somewhere on the page’. - If you want new top-level pages added to your menu automatically, click ‘Automatically add new top level pages’
- To manually add pages to your menu:
- Select the pages that you want to have appear from the ‘Pages’ area on the left of the page
- Click on ‘Add to Menu’
- In the main section with your menu selected, drag and drop your pages into the order you want
- To create subsections of the menu that expand when clicked on, drag the pages to the right so they are indented from the item above
Items will only be visible when the item above is clicked on; Multiple items can be added to each subsection in this manner. - When done, click ‘Save Menu’ at either the top or bottom of page
- In the 'Theme Locations' area of the page (upper left column), under 'Primary Left Menu', select the name of the menu you've created. Click 'Save'.
The menu should now display properly in your left-navigation area.
